Note | John Drury starts horse drawn coach service to Manchester - bets on horses Quote from Dukinfield Past and Present The Astley Arms, comparatively a modern hostelry, was built by John Astley, and at first was known as The White Horse. Its most famous landlord was John Drury, under whose management it acquired a wide reputation. During the summer months it wasmuch frequented by parties from Manchester and Stockport, and a coach service was established by Drury from his hotel, through Ashton, and on to Manchester. The Wakes On this hill the Dukinfield wakes were held [...] Races for saddles and bridles were often run between the Old General and the Globe Inn, Dukinfield Hall. Drury, of the Astley Arms, was wont to assert that he made a year's rent during these few days of festivity. |
