Note

Was gardener to a Capt. Penn at Camrose according to Gwen Richards, 1981. Was gardener at Waunceirch and Brynteg, large houses (?) to west of current Caewern housing estate near Neath. One of the lodges where he lived is still standing (1999). Arather stern and dry man (even as my great grandfather). He used to drink at the lamb & Flag in Bryncoch, and I had a glass pint mug which may have been his (but which has since been pinched by workmen, much to my chagrin). The house at 27 Tynyrheol Road, Bryncoch, Neath, was named 'Camrose' after the birthplace of his wife. It was built for him in 1934 (I think - I have the builder's receipt), and was lived in successively by Charles and Elizabeth, their daughter Daisy May and my grandfather Arthur Hopkins, then their daughter Marjorie and her husband Ernie. After Marjorie died, Ernie eventually lived in it on his own until about 1997, when my brother Phil and I inherited it and sold it to the neighbour Richard Thomas.
